"Said and Done"

Document legalization envisages the legal procedures necessary to retain the legal effect of a document in another country. The ultimate objective of legalization is for the document in question to satisfy the relevant authorities in the target country.

There are two basic legalization methods: consular legalization and an apostille.

An apostille is a simplified method for the international certification of documents used by the signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961. For the list of countries party to the Hague Convention, please click here.

If the country in which the document will be used is not a party to the Convention, you will require consular legalization.

In Belarus, original documents and notarized copies are legalized in the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or consular offices of the Republic of Belarus. Upon legalization, the signature of the official who legalized the document must be authenticated in the embassy of the foreign state in which the document will be used, or in the foreign consular services of the Republic of Belarus.

Legalization is not required for documents with official stamps that will be used in those countries with which Belarus has concluded legal assistance agreements. These include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Cuba, China, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Vietnam.
