An apostille is a simplified method for the international certification of documents used among the signatories to the Hague Convention’s Abolishing the Requirement for the Legalisation of Foreign Public Documents (1961). An apostille is the legalization of a document for international use. It consists of a stamp on official documents created in one state and subject to being transferred to another state. Documents issued in a Convention country that have been certified by a Convention apostille are entitled to recognition in any other Convention country, without any further authentication. An apostille authenticates the seal or stamp on the document, as well as the title of the person who signed the document. An apostille is affixed to the original documents or notarized copies.
An apostilled document can be used in any of the Convention signatories.
