The Azerbaijani language is part of the Oghuz branch of the Turkic languages and is the state language of Azerbaijan, as well as one of the state languages of Dagestan.

Azeri is also spoken in Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Ukraine, the United States, the UK, Germany and some Central Asian countries. There are more than 30 million Azeri speakers around the world.

There are four groups of dialects in the Azerbaijani language – northern, southern, eastern and western. In addition, there are Azeri dialects in Iran, Turkey and a number of other countries. Dialects differ primarily in their phonetics and vocabulary.

Azeri makes use of several scripts – the Latin script in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Arabic script in Iranian Azerbaijan, and the Cyrillic alphabet in Dagestan.

Fun Facts

The Azerbaijani language was used as a lingua franca in Transcaucasia, including Dagestan, Turkish Armenia and Iranian Azerbaijan, from the XVI century to the early XX century.

On 9 August 2001, President Heydar Aliyev issued a decree, “On Instituting a Day of the Azerbaijani Alphabet and Azerbaijani Language”.

Zadeh (“zade” is a popular part of surnames in Azerbaijan) is a suffix meaning “son of”, “daughter of” or “born of” that is used in names in Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Israel and countries of the Persian Gulf region.
