"Said and Done"

Nota Bene offers accurate and timely translations from/into Belarusian of any complexity and scope in various specialist fields.

The Belarusian language is one of the three East Slavic languages of the Indo-European language family. Belarusian is one of the official languages of the Republic of Belarus. However, the use of the Belarusian language in paperwork is somewhat limited.

Belarusian is mostly used in the territory of Belarus. Belarusian speakers abroad are for the most part emigrants from Belarus. The number of people speaking Belarusian amounts to approximately seven million. In 2009, Belarusian became an additional language of the Polish Gmina Narewka and Gmina Orla administrative districts.

The Belarusian language dates back to the XIII century, and its heyday came during the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1529, 1566 and 1588), written in Old Belarusian, became the first European codes of laws written in a national language. The literary Belarusian language was formed in the late XIX-early XX century, based upon Belarusian popular dialects.

Fun Facts

When it was part of the USSR, Belarus had the name of its official language traditionally translated into English as “Byelorussian”. The name “Belarusian” is now a globally recognized term.
