"Said and Done"

Nota Bene offers accurate and timely translations from/into Japanese of any complexity and scope in various specialist fields.

The Japanese language is the state language of Japan. Its position among other languages remains questionable, because its proposed relationships with other languages have not gained wide acceptance. Throughout the history of its development, the Japanese language has been influenced by many other languages, yet it managed to preserve its unique properties.

Japanese has been increasingly popular on a global scale owing to the rapid development of business and commercial ties with Japan. Japanese is spoken by more than 140 million people; for 125 million, Japanese is a native tongue.

The Japanese language is written with a combination of scripts comprised of Chinese characters and two syllabic scripts. Each occupies a special place in the modern Japanese language.

The Japanese script can be written either vertically or horizontally. Japanese is written vertically in columns going from top to bottom and ordered from right to left for literature and newspapers. In scientific literature, the European system is used: Japanese is written horizontally, from left to right, with successive rows going from top to bottom, in order to make it easier to insert formulas.

Fun Facts

“Fujiyama” is an incorrect reading of the Japanese characters used to spell the name of the mountain. Japanese speakers refer to the mountain as “Fuji-san”.

In Japanese, “metro” is written in three characters, meaning “down”, “soil” and “iron”.

In Japanese, the word for “blue” (ao) is often used for colors that English speakers would refer to as “green”, such as the color of a traffic signal meaning “go”.
