The Slovak language is an Indo-European language that belongs to the West Slavic languages. Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia.

Of the six million Slovak speakers, more than five million live in Slovakia. Approximately 500,000 Slovak speakers live in the United States; 300,000 reside in the Czech Republic, and a few tens of thousands live in Hungary, Serbia, Canada, Romania, Austria and Poland.

The Slovak script is based upon the Latin alphabet. The fundamentals of the modern written Slovak language, based upon the middle dialect, were laid out in the XIX century.

Slovak has three groups of dialects – western, eastern and central.

Fun Facts

The letters “ó”, “q” and “w” are only used in foreign words, never in native Slovak words.

Slovak is sometimes referred to as “Slavic Esperanto” because it is regarded as the most comprehensible language for speakers of other Slavic languages.
