The Moldovan language is an Eastern Romance language spoken in the Republic of Moldova as the state language. Besides modern Moldova, dialects of Moldovan are also spoken in Moldavia, one of the four regions in modern Romania.
Moldovan is similar to the Romanian language (some linguists believe it is a dialect of Romanian rather than a separate language); however, during its historic transformations, Moldovan has gained some independence.
The first texts in Moldovan – translations of religious Slavic books – date from the late XV century-early XVI century. The literary Moldovan language was formed as late as the second half of the XIX century.
