Nota Bene offers accurate and timely translations from/into Latvian of any complexity and scope in various specialist fields.

The Latvian language belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. It is the official state language of Latvia and one of the 23 official languages of the European Union. There are approximately 1.4 million native Latvian speakers, including the speakers of the Latgalian dialect.

The Latvian language is also spoken as a second language by most of the Russian language speakers living in Latvia, as well as a limited number of Latvian emigrants and their descendants in other countries of the world (Russia, the United States, Sweden, Ireland, England, Canada, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia, etc.); hence, the total number of Latvian speakers exceeds two million people globally.

The first written documents in Latvian appeared in the XVI-XVII centuries. The script used during those times was developed by German monks and failed to reflect the peculiarities of the spoken Latvian language. Those texts, like many other texts written prior to the mid-1930s, used the Gothic alphabet. This was replaced by the Latin script in the new version of the alphabet.

The Latvian literary language is based upon the Middle dialect.
